Stouffville library provides 3D printers to help produce PPE

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library is lending their 3D printers to 1to1 Rehab to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) for frontline workers.

1to1 Rehab is a home care company that serves contracts through the Ministry of Health. They reached out to the library to assist in their initiative of creating ‘face shields’. The local rehab business helps patients that are discharged from hospitals to home care in order to free beds in the hospital and prevent admissions to the hospital unrelated to COVID-19 during this critical time.

“The library is grateful to be able to assist our health care workers in this difficult time,” said Margaret Wallace, Library Chief Executive Officer. “There is nothing more important that this equipment could do than help provide much needed personal protective equipment.”

The library has supplied two 3D printers and available filament, as well as remote tech support for the use of the printers. There is an urgent shortage across Ontario of PPE including masks and face shields, which is a serious safety concern for the community seeking to flatten the curve of the virus.

“It is in the midst of a crisis like COVID-19 when you see innovative and creative residents rise up to solve problems,” Mayor Iain Lovatt said. “The concern surrounding the availability of PPE’s for our front-line health care workers has been front and center of every news cycle. Alison, from Stouffville’s 1to1 Rehab, and the WSPL teaming up to 3D print these much-needed face masks is what makes this great community we call home.”

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville initiated a number of responses to COVID-19 which included closing town facilities, restricting access to parks and playgrounds and issuing a state of emergency.
