New round of scam again targets Chinese people

The Toronto Police Service is warning the public about a scam that is once again targeting Chinese people, who are being told by an unknown person to go into hiding or their family in China will be hurt.

The unknown person(s) is reportedly also telling them not to use social media or cell phones and then contacts their families in China, telling them their son or daughter has been kidnapped and demanding a large ransom.

Police issued the warning on May 17. They dealt with several occurrences of the same scam in November that targeted Chinese international students. They’ve been in touch with the victims of the scam and remind people to be vigilant and to contact them immediately if they feel they’re involved in the scam.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-2222, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637).
