For the second consecutive year, some of the top emerging basketball talent in North America is headed to Mississauga for the NBA G League Showcase.

The showcase is the league’s primary scouting event where personnel from around the National Basketball Association (NBA) gather in one spot to judge talent. Formerly called the National Basketball Association Development League, the G League is the official minor league of the NBA that prepares players, coaches, officials, trainers and front office staff for careers as a pro. The league also serves as a research and development laboratory for the NBA where new rules and playing methods can be introduced and tested.

The four-day, 26-game event will begin Jan. 10 and feature the league’s 26 teams playing two regular season games. There will be as many as seven games each day, played at the Hershey Centre and the nearby SportZone.

The Mississauga-based Raptors 905, an affiliate of the Toronto club, will host the event. Some of the current Mississauga players who have played in Toronto include Alfonzo McKinnie, CJ Miles, Lucas Nogueira, Jakob Poeltl, Norman Powell, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, Delon Wright and Bruno Caboclo. Raptors 905 won the league championship last season.

“We’re thrilled to work in partnership with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and Raptors 905 to bring the NBA G League Showcase back to Mississauga,” said G-League president Malcolm Turner. “Last year’s event proved to be successful on and off the court, and I’m looking forward to another week of great basketball and community events in the Greater Toronto Area.”

Since its inception, the showcase has led to 50 players being called up to the NBA, based on their performances. Last year Yogi Ferrell was signed by the Dallas Mavericks from the G League’s Long Island Nets after the event. He went on to earn NBA All-Rookie second team honours.

The showcase will also feature several off-the-court events including panel discussions, coaching clinics and initiatives geared towards students. A complete schedule of events is available through the Raptors 905 website.
