The Living Arts Centre (LAC) offers the choice of two upcoming musical events for those who enjoy the nostalgic sounds of jazz, swing and old time rock and roll.

“Basically Basie Big Band: Basie’s Ladies” features the renowned Basically Basie Big Band under the direction of Jim Davey, with vocals by Sarah Hiltz. The show will highlight the legendary female jazz and pop vocalists that performed and recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra. William “Count” Basie was one of the greatest band leaders of the swing/jazz era, with The Count Basie Orchestra earning 18 Grammy awards throughout its lifetime.

Included in the repertoire is the music of Sarah Vaughan, Diane Schuur and Rosemary Clooney, with a highlight being the music of Ella Fitzgerald in celebration of the 100th anniversary of her birth.

The “Looking Back at Retro Music Concert” features the lively sounds of both Robbie Lane and The Disciples and Mississauga’s own Dreamboats. The show will also feature special guests Keith Hampshire (with his hits Daytime, Nighttime, The First Cut is the Deepest and more), and blues performer Sam Taylor.

Robbie Lane has been entertaining Canadians on radio, television and turntables for many years. Along with the talented musicians who form The Disciples, he creates energetic music to keep everyone dancing.

The Dreamboats is a group of young men who are bringing back the good old Rock and Roll era with a sound that is the best of both Chuck Berry and The Wonders. Together they create a high energy, entertaining show that showcases their impressive harmonies, instrumental talents and contagious dance steps.

Both shows take the stage Sept. 30 at the LAC, 4141 Living Arts Dr. “Basically Basie Big Band: Basie’s Ladies” is at 7:30 pm in the RBC Theatre. The “Looking Back at Retro Music Concert” is at 8pm in Hammerson Hall. For tickets: livingartscentre.ca/theatre-performances.
