Diversity and inclusion strategy at city hall

As a workplace, the City of Mississauga is making diversity and inclusion an integral part of the way they do business.

In partnership with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, a new “Workforce Diversity and Inclusion Strategy” has been created to help ensure the municipality is well positioned to continue providing excellent customer service while attracting top talent, fostering greater employee inclusion and engagement and incorporating changes in legislation.

“Our five-year strategy is about strengthening what we already have and building on that foundation,” said Janice Baker, city chief administrative officer. “Ensuring we recognize the uniqueness of all of our employees is important. We want our work environment to continue to be one that values and respects individuals for their talents, skills and ability; a respectful workplace that is accessible, equitable and fair for all.”

The strategy focuses on four goals: creating a workplace that fosters a culture of diversity and inclusion; attracting and retaining a diverse workforce with unique skills and abilities to create a workforce with a competitive advantage; supporting leaders in modelling and promoting behaviours of a diverse and inclusive workplace; and creating and aligning processes, policies, plans, practice programs and services that meet the diverse needs of those they serve.

“With more than 6,000 full-time and part-time employees, we want to have the right people in the proper role, in a supportive environment,” said Gary Kent, corporate services commissioner and chief financial officer. “Through our Workforce Diversity and Inclusion Strategy we will attract, engage and retain the best talent.”
