The Powerade Centre will be the site of a card on August 17 that includes a championship bout between North American Boxing Association welterweight champion Sam Vargas and challenger Ali Funeka.
The bout is considered one of the highest-level fights to be staged in the Greater Toronto Area in several years.
“Sam is still at a stage in his career where he’s improving and to challenge a guy who’s been a world title contender for the better part of a decade shows that he’s still hungry and still wants to test himself,” promoter Lee Baxter says.
Vargas, who was born in Bogota and raised in Mississauga, has a record of 25-3-1, including 13 knockouts. He had a streak of five consecutive five consecutive wins end in his last fight in November, 2016.
Funeka represents a measuring stick for Vargas to gauge comparisons of him against some of the top welterweights in the world.
This is the second card of the year at the Powerade Centre, which hadn’t had a card for six years. There is resurgence in the boxing resurgence in the Greater Toronto Area market with cards at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga and now the Powerade Centre.
Tickets for Saturday’s card start at $40 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
